Dr. Jordi Kleiner
PhD
Education - Gifted Children, Learning Disabilities, Special Education

Dr. Kleiner received his PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University and currently directs a Learning Clinic, in which he supervises learning specialists and tutors. He also works closely with psychiatrists, speech-language therapists, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, social workers, and neuropsychologists, which helps cultivate different approaches and specializations.

In his practice, Dr. Kleiner utilizes standardized psychometric instruments for DSM-IV diagnoses as well as individually constructed educational therapy materials that he has developed over the last ten years. His theoretical orientation is based deeply in developmental and cognitive psychology, as well as a language-based outlook on reading and written language. Dr. Kleiner has trained in numerous remediation traditions, from which he designs his individualized work with children.

Dr. Kleiner's approach is straightforward: First, identify individual neurocognitive differences that make learning easy and hard; and second, use this neurocognitive profile to help overcome educational setbacks. Successful approaches include accommodations in school, demystification with the child, and strategy development. It is critical to know which idiosyncrasies are considered within normal development and which are red flags of something larger.

Dr. Kleiner's special interests include nonverbal learning disabilities, children with double exceptionalities (gifted and learning disabled), adolescents with executive functioning disorder, Asperger's and other spectrum disorders, dyslexia, and adults with undiagnosed learning challenges.
